I'd always understood this parable's message to be that everyone, even those from enemy nations, are one's neighbours and ought to be loved. However someone I was arguing with earlier said the message was that one's neighbours are those who show themselves to be worthy of love by their actions. This seems to be supported by the fact that of the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan, only the Samaritan is described by Jesus as a neighbour. Should we take this to mean that we're only to love the good?
