God gave us animals to eat, but they are God's first creation, and he does care for them. Psalm 50:10 says 'for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.' Matthew 6:26 says 'Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are?' This puts value on the birds in the air in God's eyes. God clearly cares about these creatures, and when we kill them for no good reason other than "sport" I'm certain that he's disappointed. It would be like if your dad gave you a "world's best son" trophy and you decided to use it as a hammer and ruined it. It's something he cared enough to give you, and you didn't treat it properly. I think especially in this age when we don't have to sacrifice animals to God anymore, and we have the means to produce food without having to kill animals, there isn't a good reason to do it.
We have a men's gun group at my church and I think that's great, guns aren't for me but I'm glad they have a way to connect, but when they talk about possible hunting trips in the future I can't help but feel frustrated with the hypocrisy.
