It seems that the emphasis on faith as a kind of belief and salvation by such faith seems to assume a kind of "doxastic voluntarism" or the idea that we have control over our beliefs. I'm not quite sure this is a settled question, and it seems to inspire a lot of debate (though more in the philosophy world than in the Christian world, which is strange given that to many Christians the nature of their salvation depends on this concept). In any case, I've been wondering what the nature of true faith is given that I have qualms with doxastic voluntarism. I've heard a priest describe faith as "living in the hope that Christ was who he said he was," and honestly this seemed to resonate with me. Any thoughts on this idea of faith? Actions taken in the hope that something might be true? And if so, does this assume a belief, or simply a suspension of disbelief?
