I have some reading yet to do on this subject, but I also have an afternoon to while away so I thought I'd post and get some opinions.
I've often heard the explanation that the reason Mary was perpetually a virgin was because as the vessel that bore God she was an ark of the covenant. And the ark of the covenant is set aside for a specific purpose.
My question is this. I'm pretty sure Mary pooped. And sneezed. List any other bodily function you want. Why does being set aside for a specific purpose mean no sex and not something else? Why is sex the only thing she can't do as ark of the covenant?
Also, as a second point, the perpetual virginity addresses the time in her life when the birth had already happened. He was never going back in there. A vessel which will never again contain the thing it's intended to contain seems like at some point you'd let it retire.
I'm not trying to be disrespectful but I'm struggling to phrase these things correctly.
