What led the Catholic Church to adopting a stance of celibacy for the clergy, when did this happen, and what was the theological, historical and social context of this? And similarly, what theological reasoning led other churches (a few Eastern churches and a majority of protestant ones) to follow the opposite path of allowing and in some cases encouraging both marriage and parenthood for their leaders?
